Character/Backstory Tropes

Post by Alpha Cygni on Wed Nov 21, 2012 3:14 pm

Exactly What It Says On The Tin. I needed somewhere to keep all my tropes, because they pile up fairly quickly. Feel free to post trope lists for your own characters.

Alpha Cygni/Deneb

  • Affably Evil/Wicked Cultured: Formerly a high-ranking villain, but always more interested in the elegance of a well-executed plan than in mindless atrocities, and more likely to cultivate genuine friends than backstab its way up the ranks.
  • A God I Am Not: While effectively wielding the powers of a minor deity, more so without power limiters, Deneb refuses the title of 'god', disdains youthful immortals who claim divinity, and actively resents the idea of being worshipped.
  • Badass Boast/But For Me, It Was Tuesday: On occasion. Generally goes along with a large can of whoop-ass being opened.
  • Badass Long Robe: The uniform for Deneb's organization consists of a judge's black robe emblazoned with alien symbols pertaining to law and order. Other, hooded variants are often white, purple, and gold with more elaborate designs, and are occasionally - but not always - deliberate references to Assassin's Creed. This is mainly for aesthetics and intimidation, not an attempt to stay inconspicuous.
  • Bag of Holding: Most Omicron cybernetics include access to a rather spacious, meticulously organized pocket of self-contained space.
  • Bizarre Alien Biology: Title dropped in the applications. Much of this was bioengineered in an attempt to rid the species of any need for most bodily fluids, including a space-distorting, fluidless 'stomach' that can be used as a weapon.
  • Black Comedy/Dead Baby Comedy: Its sense of humor rarely discriminates in this sense, and is often cruel.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Is an extremely powerful, ancient alien entity tasked with preserving physical order by any means necessary. It also spends a great deal of time reading for fun and having nice, quiet tea breaks, and happens to be a fan of Friendship is Magic.
  • Cloudcuckoolander/The Cuckoolander Was Right: Can come across as this, especially when the fourth wall is involved. Almost certainly an act.
  • Combat Pragmatist: Will use almost any potential advantage in combat, within reason.
  • Confusion Fu: Often fights unpredictably and uses unconventional forms of attack.
  • Continuity Nod/Call Back: Often, in the form of visualizing events that took place on parallel universes (such as other roleplayers' missions).
  • Cute as a Bouncing Betty: In visual form, as most of its technological implements are openly homages to My Little Pony.
  • Cyborg: Deneb is heavily loaded with cybernetic enhancements, complete with a full HUD and eidetic memory storage.
  • Dangerously Genre Savvy: Knows many, many tropes, and has read a great deal of genre fiction, to the point of occasionally weaponizing references.
  • Deadpan Snarker: All the time when it's not openly trolling.
  • Death From Above: A staple tactic of those with flight and ranged weaponry. That, and Deneb has a fondness for convenient rooftops.
  • Doing In The Wizard: The entire purpose of Deneb's occupation. Occasionally involves literally doing in the wizard.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Formerly, leading to its massive, public departure from the Infernal Hordes. Still despises petty vices and mindless violence, referring to them as cheap, third-rate villainy, and extends this attitude to minor, superficial 'good'. Overlaps with Noble Demon and Pragmatic Villainy.
  • Flying Car: More of a flying all-terrain vehicle with very limited spaceflight capability, but the Hyperion qualifies.
  • Fourth Wall Observer: Can see into alternate universes, to the point where it is perfectly capable of reading the forum text and calling out RPers.
  • Immortality: Deneb is biologically immortal, and can avert death using constructed backup bodies.
  • Implacable Man: As a result of all that bioengineering, Deneb can be stabbed in various places that would be fatal to humans with no ill effects.
  • Insistent Terminology: It is universe, not dimension!
  • Gameplay and Story Segregation: In-universe; effects such as the Reality Field are only permanent outside of combat.
  • Good Is Not Nice: Despite presently being committed to good, Deneb's personality has not changed much. It may occasionally be nice or seem likable, but often only to those it does not write off as useless idiots.
  • Hey, It's That Voice!: Intentionally invoked, with John de Lancie (as Discord)'s voice.
  • Jetpack: This is actually a retractable magitek unit that directly creates kinetic force instead of using jets. Occasionally subject to midair bobbing, but only in situations where it can be realistically expected.
  • For the Lulz: Deneb's reason for placing massive handicaps on itself while in Sol space and other strange behavior.
  • Leitmotif: Uses Discord's fan theme music. Unusual in that it can actually cause its own background music to play during threads in-character.
  • Lemony Narrator: Deneb's snark regularly enters the narration.
  • Magnificent Bastard: Known for this, past and present - especially in the role of demon. Frequently criticizes newer generations for lacking style, substance, or both in the creation and execution of plans both villainous and heroic.
  • Morph Weapon: One limited pair of hovering bludgeons has the ability to take the forms of certain (blunt) objects. This is used mainly to parry blows or to pimp slap people at range in hand form. They also glow, although this was done intentionally - partly for aesthetics, and partly to indicate when an enemy is hit - and can be deactivated on command.
  • Motor Mouth: Deneb is very, very talkative. It often uses this - and its easily changed voice - as a form of psychological warfare.
  • Mundane Utility: Hand-shaped, articulated floating orbs are quite helpful for handling heavy or far-away objects. Spitting nearly any substance using stored, eaten matter can be used for a multitude of purposes that have absolutely nothing to do with combat.
  • Ninja Pirate Zombie Robot: Is something in between a commando, a super-spy, an Assassin, and Judge Dredd.
  • No Biological Sex/Asexuality: Has this, along with its entire species; their reproductive system is completely alien to Earth/Haven. Yes, 'it' is the correct pronoun, regardless of what some people may think. Deneb (as well as its RPer) prefers this over 'he' or 'she'.
  • Noble Demon: Formerly this, to the point of managing to have real friends among ancient villains - even convincing some to defect along with it, or at least do nothing to hinder its plans - and refusing to resort to Klingon Promotions to get ahead.
  • Pet The Dog: Has always liked cute animals, and treats NPCs unusually well.
  • The Proud Elite/Insufferable Genius: Displays extreme elitism in terms of intellectual prowess and morally-charged actions, going so far as to perform a Heel Face Turn out of sheer distaste for 'unsophisticated' newer demons.
  • Ray Gun: Comes in plasma cannon/miniature sun launcher, laser, mind-magic beam, and enormous orbital laser cannon varieties, but usually written in an attempt to portray such weapons in as plausible a way as possible.
  • Reality Ensues: The eponymous ability imposes Omicron-approved physical laws in an area.
  • Reference Overdosed: Deliberately invoked by Deneb, who enjoys near-constantly referencing old Earth pop culture.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech/World of Cardboard Speech: When it drops its façade of vaguely disinterested mischief, this is usually forthcoming. Occasionally overlaps with Exposition of Immortality (Type C).
  • Rule of Cool/Rule of Fun/Rule of Funny: A large part of the reason behind many of Deneb's actions, such as floating around in robes half the time, limiting its own power to normal Haven levels, and attacking with bread respectively. Does not extend to breaking physics.
  • Rules Lawyer/Zeroth Law Rebellion: Deneb can be particularly creative with the rules and regulations of its organization... and of the universe itself. Overlaps with Exact Words in general, and Jerkass Genie on occasions where its abilities allow it to do so.
  • Shout Out: Lives for this. Several lines, including "I am the law", are said almost exclusively for the purpose of making a pop culture reference.
  • Super Senses: Powerful enough to pierce the Fourth Wall and perceive the rest of the multiverse, as well as more immediately practical applications such as seeing more of the EM spectrum than humans. Comes with a dash of Hyper Awareness and Supernatural Preternatural Sensitivity.
  • Supreme Chef: Apart from simply constructing food on the molecular level, Deneb is an accomplished cook using normal methods.
  • Theme Naming: In various forms. Deneb itself has an organization-assigned stellar name, and its equipment is all named after Greek titans.
  • Time Abyss: Is older than several star systems, and has experienced almost all of that time.
  • Trickster: Oh so much. Goes hand in hand with Magnificent Bastard. Overlaps heavily with Troll, even on the side of 'good'.
  • Trope Overdosed: Just look at all the potholes! This index doesn't even have all the links yet.
  • Unperson: Among the Legions of Hell, the great Resignation Party officially never happened, in an attempt to cover up embarrassment.
  • The Unpronounceable: Deneb is an assigned name, based on Earth/Haven star names. Its real name is impossible to render in human languages.
  • Unreliable Narrator: Elements of the backstory may not be perfectly accurate; they may be believable excuses presented by Deneb or its employers.
  • Voice Changeling: How it has Discord's voice to begin with. Uses this with ventriloquism to perform psychological warfare. Occasionally emulates the Voice of the Legion or the ROYAL CANTERLOT VOICE.
  • What Measure Is a Non Super?: Averted hard. Deneb sees NPCs as far more than cannon fodder or convenient background embellishment, and will viciously mock characters - or writers - who treat them as such.
  • Willfully Weak: Deneb keeps itself and its equipment under very heavy limiters, purely to avoid making things boring.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Technically, as most characters are children relative to Deneb's age.

The Omicron

  • Alien Non-Interference Clause: Subverted in-universe. The Celestial-affiliated faction claims this as a primary motivation, but many officials deliberately Rules Lawyer their way out of having to follow through, and find justifications for dropping shiploads of alien technology on an undeveloped planet.
  • Bio-Augmentation: Almost universal for the Omicron. Cybernetics are also common.
  • Blue and Orange Morality: To the point where morality is generally treated as an amusing hobby, or a collection of hats to swap out every few centuries.
  • Dark Is Not Evil/Light Is Not Good: The Omicron consider this idea laughable, and assign no connotations to simple scientific phenomena.
  • The Federation: Technically one multi-species interstellar society, albeit split into factions (nominally) based on attitudes toward noninterference policies. Despite the supposed "war", inter-faction relations are fairly good.
  • Magitek: Most Omicron technology is based at least partly on magic.
  • Reality Warper: Or Reality Unwarper. They possess technology that allows them to rewrite or preserve the laws of physics at will.
  • Screw the Rules, I Make Them!: Frequently overlaps with the above Alien Non-Interference Clause and Reality Warper tropes.
  • Starfish Language: Common, but the effect is mitigated using translation software and a standard galactic language.
  • Star Killing: Can do this with a concerted, but relatively minor effort. They can even hurl suns into other suns, if they can be bothered to, but generally prefer creating new suns or tapping existing ones for power.
  • Sufficiently Advanced Alien: The Omicron are advanced enough to do nearly anything in the Milky Way. They have not spread far outside of the galaxy simply because some among them proposed, jokingly, that they 'think small' and temporarily curb expansion - and were taken up on their suggestion.
  • Sufficiently Analyzed Magic/Fantastic Science: The driving philosophy behind much of Omicron scientific research.

The 'Verse

  • Clarke's Third Law: Sort of. Magic is science in this case.
  • Minovsky Physics: Magic is closely linked to conventional physics, and is explicitly a fundamental force tied to its own particle.
  • Mohs Scale of Science Fiction Hardness: Designed to fall within the Physics Plus subset.
  • Power Crystal: This is because crystalline materials have greater magical conductivity, while glasslike materials serve as magical insulators.
  • Our Spirits Are Different: Souls are considered to be unique sets of the electric patterns that make up an individual's thoughts. Spirits (the disembodied kind) are these patterns contained in a non-biological substance (usually plasma contained in magnetic fields and directed, all using magic). These are all material and can be copied, transformed, combined, destroyed/dissipated, or outright created.

Important notice: From now on, Deneb will personally bitch-slap anyone who uses any form of the term "other dimension" where it should be "other universe", because the former is wrong.

You guys really need to do this. Once you get into tvtropes, it's FUN.

Carrie Akyla
ArtificialIntelligence - She has a device on her hip, Lumosa, which stores matter as energy and is controlled by an artificial intelligence Carrie created.
BioAugmentation - Enhanced mental capacity, telekinesis, telepathy, and catgirl biomods.
CatGirl - Meowza.
ElementalPowers - She has developed the ability to manipulate, bend, and weaponize light.
TheEngineer - She is one.
Flight - By using telekinesis on her clothes. She wears tight pants and a tight shirt under her top so she doesn't look like she's simply laying on her flying clothes... which is basically what she's doing.
FlyingCar - Yep, she built one.
HandshakeSubstitute - A kiss of the finger, touching it to one's own head, and pointing at the recipient. It means you love and respect the person in body and mind.
HotScientist - Meowza.
HumanAliens - Carrie's world is populated by the descendents of humans taken to Erde by aliens during the Dark Ages.
HyperSpaceArsenal - Carrie keeps her gear in a device on her hip that converts matter to energy for storage.
IdentityAmnesia - Carrie has not yet learned that she is a demigoddess of the Egyptian cat goddess Bast. Her newly manifested light bending is the first sign of that reawakening.
TheLeader - Of Kyré.
MagneticWeapons - Carrie loves magnetism as a source of acceleration or power. She has a railgun with her at all times.
MindOverMatter - Carrie utilizes telekinesis.
Reincarnation - Carrie is a reincarnation of an ancient Egyptian priestess from the city of Bubastis, during the time of Pharaoh Takelot I.
Telepathy - The standard biomod for scientists in Carrie's world.

Redoing this post from scratch, because of how old it is.

"I am not Death. I am killing; I am the verb, I am the action, I am the performance. I am the movement that cuts the spine; I am the mass which pulps the brain. I am the headsnap ejecting consciousness into the air."
The only relevant thread is Weapons if you want to fight.
Actually, if you don't read it, don't bother challenging me.
