A long time in the light [Open]

Post by Brutus Demetriou on Mon Apr 08, 2013 4:11 am

First topic message reminder :

"It's been a long time, Shinrei." The voice echoed off the peaks for a long time before fading away, the tone wistful, the voice itself very, very deep, as though there were a couple of rocks grinding against one another to produce the greeting. The man that issued the proclamation stood at the edge of a bluff very, very high in the mountains, looking down at the scattered outskirts of a country he hadn't been in properly since he escaped to the mountains after his sons death. The man was a very impressive 8' tall, with some few added inches. The sight of him, like a bronzed god standing on the edge of a cliff, as though surveying his domain would make many a person stare if there was anyone to see anything, as he wore very little save a voluminous kilt and some anklets. His feet were bare, yet like the rest of him didn't seem bothered by the volumes of snow puddled around him, cold as it was.

Volumes of long black hair recently washed in a snowbank flowed out behind him, barely stirring in the small amount of wind as he stood at the edge of oblivion and mused on his life. His period of mourning was over, it was time to return to the land of darkness, from the land of light. The sun never seemed to set up here, it was too far north. There was nowhere to hide, all of your secrets were laid bare to the relentless glare of the sun. It was soothing. Nothing snuck up on you, and you were forced to realize the foolishness of hiding from your shame.

Very few people ventured up to the tops of the mountains, it was uncomfortable for those with things to hide. Those few that did come were easy to avoid, they didn't expect a bear the size of a small truck to be the same color as the snow, and weren't looking for a bear in the first place, and so often missed him even as he napped upon the snow, in plain view. If anyone were to come upon him now however, he would be easy to spot. His body was nut brown despite so much time in an environment more likely to turn him blue, because he'd spent the vast majority of the time covered in a snow white coat. That time was over now, and it was time to rediscover the joys of speech, the above being the first sentence he'd spoken in a very long time, aloud.

Grimm could tell from the multi armed woman's tone that she seemed tense and didn't like running into some random man in the woods but she had allowed him to join their group and he quickly closed the gap leaving his hands up so no one would think he was pulling a fast attack.

He looked ta the girl on the bears back and he frowned a bit, her skin was pale and her digits were off colored, signs of frost bite and he could understand why. "I'm going to remove my jacket now, I am not trying anything." he said toward the WereBear, since he was approaching it. His arms sliding swiftly from his sleeves and catching the long leather jacket with its fur lining before it fell into the snow; he moved a bit closer to the bear so that he was right up on his side and his arms went up and over the bear, draping the jacket on the freezing girl before he moved back. He nodded at the bear before walking back up to the Woman that was leading the group, " First off, name's Grimm but you can call me Caster if you wish. Second I think whatever questions you want to ask me should wait til we're safely out of this weather." he said, his fingers dancing together, sparks conjoining from his opposed finger tips and sprouting into flame, the flame sustaining itself in his palm, being the size of a baseball at the base. It gave off very little light as to not give them away if something was waiting in the dark but gave off a little heat to keep the woman who had started chattering a bit some warmth. (OOC idk how your magic system works here so if this is too advanced I will cut it out) His hands moved free of the flaming orb and it hovered between the two, warming them both as they walked on. Him quit and watching the darkening tree lines for anything out of the norm.

((There is no unified magic system. People do it differently, depending on who you ask. Short post. Not much to do when you're a bear and other people are talking.))

The one who had produced the flame would bear watching as they continued their trek through the snows, as he had removed his jacket ostensibly for the benefit of the sick woman but did not seem to be ill affected by the weather. He did not have the excuse Brutus had for resisting the elements, and a small floating flame that hadn't existed until after he'd removed his jacket was not the reason he was unbothered either. Perhaps he had a higher than normal internal temperature to produce those kinds of tricks, or an innate resistance to the reverse element.

Keeping an ear alert for any movement of the flame between the two of them, or of the man himself, he resumed his forward momentum, assuming the rest of them would either follow his lead or overtake him to resume their previous marching order. After all, besides a vague forward direction and some lights in the distance, he hadn't the faintest idea where the group was going, save the vaguest of descriptions and the idea that there would probably be food he could smell when they neared the inn.

Yubie watched with a stern glare as the man approached, but as he took his coat off and wrapped it around the freezing woman, her facial features softened and she seemed less aggressive towards Grimm. He agreed to answering her questions so long as they got out of the cold first, and Yubie had no argument to the suggestion. Now that silence had fallen again, Yubie began to move towards the city, hoping that the interruptions had stopped at least momentarily so that they could reach safety before they'd frozen over. After picking up the pace, Yubie could sense what seemed to be the presence of others; this time, it was merely due to the citizens of the city moving about in the streets.

Grateful that they'd finally arrived at their destination, Yubie took in the very welcome sight of the city, observing the local reactions to the scene of a bear, woman, country leader, and man walking in a group. Some seemed surprised or a little startled, but didn't bother to make it visibly obvious. The majority simply waved, or went inside their homes to keep themselves safe from the frost and possible awkward encounter. Vaguely familiar with the city, as her path to leave the populated area of Shinrei and investigate the presence of a giant bear in the north was through this area, Yubie located a small diner and pointed at it, looking back to see if her choice was accepted by the others.

"Here we can get food. Rooms are not far from here, though it seems like the sooner we rest and eat, the better. Anyone have any objections?"

Finally, movements. The first step to reaching the promise land and hopefully, relief and safety. As she felt the forward motion of her vehicle, Sena prayed that the trip would be over, so is her headaches and frost bites. As they go farther and farther, and the time spent outside became longer and longer, Sena's pain in both legs and head became too overwhelming that she couldn't help but to give off loud intermittent shrieks of agony. The jacket given by the man whom she couldn't remember his name at this point was actually useless. It didn't take long when they finally reached the town. She was unaware of the eyes that scrutinized her existence, or were they actually looking at the bear? Actually, she was even oblivious that they finally set their foot in the town because she was busy with her own predicament.

Still her hand tugging her blonde hair, Sena just gave off a short "u-huh" as a reply to the child's query, which was followed by her twitching on the bear's back.

(OoC: there's nothing much to say when you're in pain, right? XD)

Grimm walked along with the group quietly, keeping the flame going until they descended into the valley of the town. The tiny fire popping out of existence and the energy traveling into the palm of his right hand, warming it slightly before the remnants of the spell vanished. He managed to look back one time at the WereBear and the injured girl, he saw her in pain, his own jacket not really helping her in her current state.

He nodded once more at the bear before turning forward and walking onward, the townspeople stopping on the streets as the odd group passed, eyeing them in a wary way. He didn't really care, his line of work often brought strange looks so he was accustomed to the stares. He wasn't though accustomed to company and even though he had just met this pack of strange people he felt at ease around them, they seemed to be smart enough and had a level of affection for one another.

When the leader spoke and pointed at a building for them to rest and warm up at he merely nodded, wanting to get the girl whom appeared to be close to death out of the elements. His eyes looking down the shadows of the ally ways swiftly, always watching for a threat, as they were always there.

The woman was in such agony by this point that she let out intermittent shrieks of pain, and would probably be writhing on his back if not for the fact that it was a problem with the cold, which was why she was so still. Upon confirmation that they were indeed stopping at the diner indicated, he moved to the front of the party, leaning in such a way that the woman slid partially off of his back, possibly provoking discomfort, and grabbed her with one large paw over his shoulder. Placing her on the ground, he was divided about leaving her slumped in such a place, covered as she was by the eaves of the building from the snow, but there was nothing for it.

He placed her small body as carefully as he could against the wall, wincing inside at the fact that she was hurting, likely even more because he moved her. He himself then moved around the side of the diner into an alley, giving an eye to the mystery man as he loped past, to shift back into human form. It would take some time, and the horrible snapping and cracking noises coming from said alley would keep the less adventurous people away. The more adventurous could live with the bloody image of a nearly nine foot white bear turning back into an over eight foot man wearing only a kilt. As he passed Yubie on his way to the alley, he gave her a very human nod and a swing of the head towards the woman as if to tell her to deal with the one who needs the help first.

Re: A long time in the light [Open]

Post by Yubie Zeta on Sun May 12, 2013 1:42 am

Shocked, Yubie realized just how grave the woman's situation was, as the young leader rarely experienced severe difficulty surviving in the cold. The woman that had been carried on Brutus's back wasn't just frigid, she was in pain, and had began to shriek. A few times, she opened her mouth to perhaps give comforting words, but realizing she knew none that surfaced in her mind, she sealed her lips again and neared Brutus with intent to assist. He placed the mysterious woman on the ground, and Yubie observed the hue of the lady's skin. She was slightly afraid to come any closer, as she wasn't accustomed to being the one to provide medical treatment or care to another being, especially if the being was still living, and could easily be harmed in such a state.

The child's face maintaining a placid composure, she turned back to look at Brutus for a moment, curious as to why the currently white werebear was moving away from the diner. The sounds of snapping and something being distorted made Yubie feel a peculiar sinking feeling in her gut, and she swayed for a moment, realizing that the noise was coming from the oddly gentle giant. Wondering if the transition was painful, she did her best not to stare when he reappeared in the form that she'd first seen him in, only looking enough to catch the gesture he'd made. Understanding, she gently lifted the frozen individual to her feet with the arms that appeared to come out of her back, and she carefully helped the woman into the warm atmosphere of the diner.

"...there's food inside. I'm sure they have blankets. Chairs, too."

Yubie's attempt at conversation with the frozen woman was almost pathetic, as she fought to hold back the display of discomfort that came with being so close to the stranger. Yubie had touched others, moved them out of dangerous situations, or even carried them if they were injured. Helping someone who was barely conscious walk, though, was a different matter, and the child didn't want to invade on any sense of pride the woman may have had. Finally, she managed to seat the woman in a cushioned seat; the keepers of the diner recognized Yubie immediately and began cooking up food as soon as she nodded in their direction and gestured to the kitchen.

"This woman's suffering from frostbite, and who knows what else. I request that you retrieve us a few useful supplies and a blanket. I can't imagine this situation being uncommon in this area, correct?"

The waiter shook his head and explained a little before darting up the stairs to what was likely a storage area. He quickly returned with the requested items, giving the blanket to Yubie, which was immediately placed around the woman in a snug manner. The man then explained that it'd be unwise to do anything too severe to raise her temperature, as it could have painful effects; they would have to keep an eye on her and slowly bring her temperature back to normal. Yubie turned back to look at the others, curious as to how the new individuals would react to the setting. She found herself grateful that the place was mostly empty, with only a few seats filled in the background of a few family groups eating together.

Grimm watched as people hustled about with blankets and bowls of water with sponges, three people stopped by the girl who appeared close to death, dabbing the sponges on her. He stepped forward a bit thinking they were idiots until he noticed the steam coming of of the water, they were dabbing warm water on her to slowly thaw her out a bit. He relaxed and moved to take a seat near the woman whom appeared to be in charge, trying to remember her name once more. Yubie? Yeah that sounded right to him, he waited for her to finish up with the comatose girl before he spoke, "Is it time for me to explain why I was out there when it appears I shouldn't have been?" he asked, his voice sounding a bit rough due to his dry throat, he looked around for water but spotted none to drink and merely accepted it as it was.

The shift having finished, Brutus did his best with the materials available in the alley to wipe off the worst of the bloodstains from where particularly eager bones had broken the skin while shifting into their new positions. It would not do to alarm the others more than they already were, with the woman's situation. He shifted the kilt to settle better on his hips, the only item of clothing he wore other than the anklet surviving each and every change, appearing once again as if from nowhere whenever he returned to human form.

The metal plates sewn into the leather clanked together with each step he took back to the others, out of the alley. Again, he was naked other than a slim stone anklet and a supple leather kilt. The soles of his bare feet left large imprints in the mostly swept snow of the street as he approached the party, his eyes sweeping over all of them, spending most of the time fixed on the wounded woman. He arrived just after the man's statement, having seen his mouth moving but was too far off to hear the words. He waited patiently for whatever would come next, standing in the snow outside the establishment, seemingly completely unbothered by the weather.

As the locals began to assist with caring for the woman, Yubie was able to turn her gaze away from her and observe the other two; her eyes immediately focused on the blood stains that were on Brutus's body, and she shuddered lightly inside, wondering how it must feel to have one's entire body change shape in such an unpleasant manner, even if the end results were interesting or helpful. The giant man didn't seem to mind the cold despite wearing so little, and Yubie decided it best not to inquire if he would like a blanket at the moment, as she was afraid of seeming invasive. Instead, she turned her attention to Zenaki when he spoke up, nodding her head when he asked his question.

"Ah, yes, that would be preferable, if you would be so kind. Ever since the attack on the capital, there's been restrictions on travel, so it's a little curious as to how both of you got here without a permit of any kind that you've shown. I'm certain the officials will be fine with it, though, so long as you've got good reasoning."

A medical team soon showed up, carrying away the woman who'd been injured due to the frostbite out the door after quickly wrapping her in a heated blanket. They'd be able to give her far better treatment at one of the local hospitals, and could ensure that the damage she had suffered wouldn't result in permanent limb or brain damage. Yubie whispered something quickly into the ear of one of the medics, mentioning something about possible amnesia, and after a sharp nod from the medic, it could be inferred that they would look into why the woman couldn't remember who she really was or why she was there. Returning her attention back to the other two, she appeared to have settled more now that the emergency was being taken care of in a proper manner.

"Oh, if you wish to stay for a while, I recommend we order some food and drink. I can't really tell how long either of you have been here without eating. Don't be concerned about the tab - I'll handle it. Think of it as my way of compensating you both for the awkward introductions."
