[Mission: Salvaging the Remains] Bear With Me

Post by Yubie Zeta on Mon Apr 29, 2013 1:42 am

Broken roads, abandoned homes, and ruined plans; that was all that was left of Yubie's capital city now, and she frowned at what had quickly become a wreckage, not just from the fact that a hole had been punched into the protective dome that guarded the city from impending doom, but from the efforts of the rescue teams who had come in before to save those that had been trapped during the panic. She closed her eyes and tried to reason with herself, reminding herself that the attack was sudden, and it had to have been well calculated, since the strike took place just as the military had disabled this sections defenses for the upgrading process. Regardless, the young leader felt that the blame lie on her shoulders since she hadn't put enough effort into defending her people, and had instead spent her time bickering about how stupid the vast majority were.

Shaking her head to free herself of a certain specific moment, she turned her attention back to her new goal, and she began to follow alongside her companion for the time being, quietly watching how he moved about. The little harvester still had so many questions in store for him, as he'd been so silent about his past, or why he decided that he needed to be punished. In her eyes, he seemed gentle, and even kind, as the moment they'd met, he showed only patience and dedication to her - even if it was at the expense of startling another. Asking wouldn't exactly be polite, however, as painful subjects were generally things you didn't want to force out of others, especially if they hadn't been given enough time to have moved on. Realizing that she was staring now, she looked away and began moving items into the mechanical unit that followed behind the two, aiming for things she knew had important qualities as the team had instructed her about.

"It's all wet..."

Yubie hadn't meant to speak up, and hadn't actually noticed that she'd said anything. It was the first time she'd said a word since Team Charlie had descended into Seig City, as her responses to viewing the damage or agreeing to other instructions had simply been from nods and high pitched intakes of breath. As opposed to her usual stoic appearance that she wore, she'd finally began to display anger and sadness on her facial features, and she didn't want to believe that it was likely that more attacks would occur as a result from her carelessness, and other people's decisions to take from everyone. Her movement picked up in pace, and every now and then, another team member checked in with her to report important information, or help her with object placement. Yubie had to manage her feelings and make sure her anger didn't end up being costly in the situation, though she found it useful to occasionally throw stronger items a little harshly aside if they weren't necessary to her.

Re: [Mission: Salvaging the Remains] Bear With Me

Post by Brutus Demetriou on Mon Apr 29, 2013 3:17 am

Moving quietly through the wrecked city, Brutus marveled at the stupidity of people capable of such destruction. There was a place for battle, and in the interest of humanity, that place was not in the middle of a city home to thousands of souls. He'd still been in solitude while the events that caused the devastation were occurring, so he hadn't personally witnessed any of the destruction and hadn't been personally invested in it in any way, yet as a citizen of the continent, even he could see the pointlessness of it. What did the person gain from drowning the livelihoods of thousands besides some sick sense of inner worth in their own eyes, regardless of the world's perception of them as heartless monsters.

As he padded softly through the streets, gently hefting objects of many shapes and sizes into the vehicles designed for the purpose, he was conscious of the masses of tons of water pressing down on them from above, held at bay by the thinnest of protective layers, its fragility shown openly by the recently patched area responsible for so much of the wreckage below. Perhaps the criminal responsible helped himself sleep at night with the conclusion that it was the water that had destroyed so many people's futures, not their own actions. The evidence was all around; how little nature cared whose fault it was.

Glancing down at the girl walking nearby, he heard her mutter about the dampness and silently agreed, responding aloud as he deemed it time to halt their silent walk, the both of them wallowing in separate wells of misery. "Yes it is. The water has made a claim on this place, and that claim will never be far from people's minds as they walk beneath this dome, if they ever do again." Silence had its place, and the city itself would become a place of silence once they were gone. Their presence was a momentary blip in the life of the new Seig, the last remnant of the old before it moved to better places, and as such they should grace the place with its last rights; the last human speech spoken above the water level in this sunken city.

Hearing Brutus's voice surprised Yubie, and she calmed for a moment to listen to his words. Another awkward silence filled the moment, as Yubie seemed to mull an idea over in her mind. He'd mentioned how the people that once lived here would never forget what had happened, and while the girl figured that memories would fade in time, the feeling of danger would still be present. She clutched what looked like a small pipe that had been uprooted from the ground, likely a part of one of the city's many remaining water systems, denting and contorting the object before finally depositing it in its new container for the time being, finally responding to Brutus's comment to her light muttering.

"They won't... not again. I won't allow it. The only ones who should live like this should be prepared to kill if necessary to prevent such a thing from happening again. Some beings are cruel in nature, and see no reason to spare others from their malice. It's another reason why we can't live without fear, and why I can't assume our safety."

Her tone of voice was harsh and bitter, though she seemed to have had some time to think about the situation and why it was she felt that way. She began to sigh and growl lightly as she worked, occasionally running into buildings that had almost toppled over from what looked like a rather large scale battle through the city, returning with various precious items that had been requested by the citizens on the list. The leader knew quite well at this point that there would be no way she could give everything back that was taken from her people, but she could at least minimize the damage by finding various family heirlooms to return, be it a tool, finances, or a stuffed bunny which she quietly cradled for a moment before setting it into the unit's container - she then looked both ways to check if anyone had seen her perform the act, and resumed the stern look on her face as if she'd never touched the toy.

"Nobody should forgive him, but he did have a few valid points..."

Re: [Mission: Salvaging the Remains] Bear With Me

Post by Brutus Demetriou on Mon Apr 29, 2013 3:56 am

So much anger filled her tiny frame, Brutus was surprised at how well she held it all in, considering her bitter musings, as though she didn't often let anything out, preferring to store it inside and let it fester. To that end, her growls and muttering were plainly not intended for anyone's ears but her own, and though Brutus could hear some of it fairly easily from his close proximity he chose to ignore it, and instead hum a soothing tune, reminiscent of a lullaby to the city as a whole. If she heard it, perhaps it would help her; if she didn't, it wasn't aimed at her in the first place.

He stayed in the street in contrast to her hurried motions back and forth. In addition to picking up items that had washed out of buildings into the thoroughfares, he righted posts and moved the remains of vehicles out of the path of the vehicles, putting his large bulk to use while her smaller, more nimble body did things he'd have a more difficult time with. His motions were gentle, yet impersonal. He did his best not to dent objects that were wedged in difficult places, yet he was not personally attached to anything in the way that the girl who was so very gentle with stuffed animals was, and as such occasionally damaged more difficult pieces.

On her next pass, he held out a hand to get her to stop for a moment and listen to him "You need to realize that you can't control everything. No matter how much you want something to never happen again, the world isn't fair. It might happen no matter how much you resist. Sure, you can try, and you should, but there comes a point where the strain of trying to stop something from happening strangles you from within, and you lose so much more than you were trying to prevent in the first place." She seemed far too young to have to listen to that kind of a lesson, but so had Sae been, and so had he himself, in the end.

Once again, the werebear behind her never ceased to add surprises and oddities to her experience of him so far, as he began to hum a tune. Yubie had heard music before on several occasions, whether it was from a radio, an instrument, or directly from people's mouths. Still, the last time she'd heard someone sing or hum simply because they felt like it was a time when Ikozu used to pick her up and comfort her when things had gone wrong. She pretended that she didn't notice so that she didn't have to feel obliged to make a comment if he stopped, though he spoke up before she had to, and Brutus began to explain a little of his wisdom on the situation.

"I see."

With that being all she could muster for a response, Yubie quickly grew silent again. Maintaining composure, she managed to hold her stern face while looking into the man's eyes. The words he'd spoken were true, yet not the ones she'd wanted to hear at this time, and she fought to quell the feeling that rapidly began to build in her core. Her heart began to pound, and she felt as if it'd slowly rattle her body into pieces if it continued at this rate. Yet, she forced herself to focus with a light gulp and small clench of her fists, turning away to continue her work so that she could shield herself from the other's eyes for a moment. She wasn't certain if she had enough control of herself, let alone a country, to respond properly without accidentally choking and stammering over her words, revealing a hefty weakness.

Ah. He might have reached her for a moment through that veil of anger, but the moment of connection quickly disappeared as she stared coldly into his eyes without saying anything, clearly unwilling to accept it. Perhaps she was too young, yet. Her gulp and the slight tensing of her muscles carried out that idea, as she wound herself even tighter to avoid letting anything out, where anyone could see it. She tried so hard, and as she turned away he resumed humming at the previous volume, going back to working on the larger objects.

Nothing had been tagged as particularly important in term of large streetside materials, so he could range further and further from the main road as he picked up larger objects, even entering some dwellings whose front halls had been blown open. His humming continued as he worked, so that he occasionally hummed exclusively to himself and the rooms he was in, and occasionally to the group at large. As he worked, he couldn't help but dwell on the little girls' angry response, and slowly worked at the problem, trying to unravel exactly what it could be that drove her to such emotional extremes.

Post by Yubie Zeta on Mon Apr 29, 2013 10:46 pm

Brutus didn't say anything in response, he just continued to hum and work, and Yubie was able to find comfort in the tune once again. She found herself wishing that she'd mustered a better response, and that she hadn't reacted so poorly to the man's advice, as Brutus seemed to have a great understanding of the situation, even if he didn't know all of the history nor her role in the events that took place in Seig during the attack. The young leader couldn't change the past, however, so she instead mulled over what he'd said in her mind, attempting to find ways to cope with what could only be described as the indiscriminate and undeniable truth of life. For now, it seemed out of her grasp, and the concept began to frustrate her more; she decided that for now, it would be best to calm herself so she could think about his shared wisdom more clearly.

Having realized that Brutus wouldn't find additional arms to be something to fear or be concerned about, Yubie created her ever useful limbs to help with the situation, using one to help carry around materials, while the other grasped at her real arm, lightly squishing and pinching it to soothe her body. Her eyes fell on the rest of the team which had now began to change out the units, as the ones being used were filling up and had to swap with empty ones. A shiny line of metallic turtles soon formed, carrying the items to the surface in groups, while another line appeared just moments later with extra units filling up the area, ready to carry more items away. It appeared as if the team had orchestrated a plan to carry every useful item out of the city as fast as possible.

"I'm sorry."

Standing behind Brutus, Yubie looked at him only for a moment, turning away before any eye contact could be initiated. Instead, she watched the team's efforts, as entire buildings were being bulldozed and scrapped so that they could be returned to the surface. Why the effort had been given to retrieve so many items that could be simply remade hadn't been explained further than the issue of civilians wanting their items and homes back and light rumors of another city needing the resources to become the new capital, yet considering the effort didn't prove to be too wasteful, one would likely best explain it as an over sized recycling movement. Yubie hadn't bothered to explain much about it either, only stating that she would need help clearing out Seig since it was attacked, and from her posture, it didn't seem that she was exactly excited about opening up and explaining why she was sorry or angry. She couldn't ignore that she'd been rude, though, and she at least did a little to express that she hadn't meant to shut Brutus out.

Re: [Mission: Salvaging the Remains] Bear With Me

Post by Brutus Demetriou on Tue Apr 30, 2013 3:14 am

As he moved out of the shadows of an overhanging building with very little left of the front wall, hefting what was left of an ornate wooden chest of drawers into one of the retreating machines, perching it relatively securely on the large piles of random refuse people found important to their lives beyond simple survival. That vehicle moved off swiftly, taking the chest of drawers and everything beneath it swiftly out of his view, presenting him with another bed, this one empty of belongings, gleaming in its clean lines and mechanical newness. The long line of turtles seemed wrong somehow, their shine piercing the almost supernatural gloom that had settled over the city in such a way that they seemed out of place, for all that they were artifacts of a civilization that had, mere weeks ago, inhabited this place.

He stopped for a moment to watch the departure and arrival of more mechanical beasts of burden and felt the silent presence of the brooding little girl at his back. His hum having continued all this time, his mind turned once again to the puzzle of her mental turmoil, having pushed it to the side in consideration of the current sad task. Her words made him turn towards her, not in time to meet her eyes but in time to watch her stand and watch the shifting of the machinery, something in her eyes that might hint at the answer, but it wasn't something he was capable of reading.

"It's alright." The girl was making an effort to connect on some level, even if it was a superficial level of apologies for rebuffing deeper attempts, and that was something. She wasn't broken by the pressure building up inside, and if he had anything to say about it, she wouldn't be. Facing her, his hum abated for the moment, he stretched out a hand in a familiar manner, again with the palm up extended hand he'd made on their first meeting. He did look at her as he did so, but with no more recrimination or accusations than he had on their first meeting. It was merely an offer of companionship as it had been then, the only thing in his eyes as he looked down at her a desire for her to have the courage to look up, to meet his eyes if only for an instant, and feel at least a little better about the situation.

Brutus's words accepting her apology felt as if she'd been lightly singed, as she was hardly used to being forgiven so quickly and calmly by another. He'd stopped humming, holding out his hand just as he had before when she first saw him in the northern ice. Confusion worked its way into Yubie's mind as he looked at her without a display of anger or blame, and she could feel that she wanted him to face him. Despite the fact that he wasn't being harmful or angry in any way, she couldn't deny that she felt afraid to look at him, as it seemed painful to her; she could not understand why that was the case. After being frozen in place for what she feared would be too long, Yubie finally turned and placed a small hand on Brutus's large palm, staring at the ground for a little longer before she finally found the strength to gaze into large, comforting eyes.

"...why?"

Her voice barely over a quiver in pitch, Yubie ended up looking down again, staring at her own small hand over Brutus's hand. She'd taken up the challenge and forced herself to face the man and look into his eyes, though the feeling welling up in her gut had returned, along with the pounding in her heart. The extra arms that had swirled around her idly now began to clutch at her sides, still trying to physically hold something inside that'd found a breach in the girl's inner security. To an extent, she worried that Brutus would think it was his fault that she was upset for some reason, as she really didn't want to insult him in any for or fashion. Regardless, whether she liked it or not, frustration and sadness had overwhelmed her, and the Shiki had begun to silently cry for the first time in a while in front of someone that knew what it meant.

Her small hand perched delicately in his much larger one, the larger issues at hand temporarily forgotten, she did look up at him though only for an instant. Her gaze instantly returning to the ground, her extra limbs began to churn, obviously agitated, this time showing that emotion on the outside, rather than bottling it up. Her voice was barely audible, and he treated her response with the respect it deserved, not replying immediately, just leaving her hand in his.

He crouched, ignoring the movement of other team members around them and retained hold of her hand, still looking at her now bent head. Her tears were barely noticeable, certainly not visible to those others moving about, and Brutus chose not to make a spectacle of them, instead choosing to crouch there, much like their first meeting though this one much more forward. He let her cry for a few moments undisturbed, and then moved his other hand to rest it on her shoulder, inviting closer contact but not pushing for it, giving her the opportunity to back away again if she wished.

"Because you need it, you need someone giving you something without you asking for it. You need support beyond what you can demand. You need people who care for you for you, rather than for what you stand for." All of this for the girl with extra arms, holding in so much anger about a city she had presumably lived in, crying silently in the street. This small bit of advice held nothing aimed at a higher purpose or thing, it was a down to earth assessment of her needs, regardless of the social status he remained unaware of.

Re: [Mission: Salvaging the Remains] Bear With Me

Post by Yubie Zeta on Tue Apr 30, 2013 5:30 am

Standing still and finally allowing the tears to run down her face, Yubie felt grateful that Brutus didn't have anything to say about her crying, as she felt angry enough about the display of sorrow. He just crouched and put a hand on her shoulder, comforting her as if he somehow understood what it was like to have so many burdens on one's mind. She allowed herself to move forward, stumbling a little as she moved her hand from Brutus's palm and placed it onto his chest, dipping her head a little further until she was almost leaning on him as if that was the closest thing she could manage to show thankfulness. The extra arms that clenched her body eventually released and faded, as she'd managed to calm herself and no longer needed to contain the feelings that threatened to seep out and make a mockery of her image any longer.

Hearing his words, she couldn't fathom why someone would consider another's needs at such a deep and personal level. She could remember the voices and faces of the friends she'd made in her own journeys during her short life, and recalled how much time they'd spend just telling her about how the world itself could be a wonderful place, and that she didn't have to live being miserable and angry every day, serving the wills of dead and agitated ghosts. Wondering if they thought similarly about life, Yubie took comfort in realizing that she had another friend by her side that wouldn't harm her even if it would be an easy task. Looking up again, she dried her tears with her free hand and smiled at the kind man before her, the curve of the smile seeming to be inhumanly large, and her eyes shone with a light that suggested that she couldn't have been more grateful for his explanation and presence.

"Oyo! We were able to handle the third sector without a problem, despite calculations! It turns out, A'tuin was able to set up a plan and position the units so that we could break apart the buildings in shingles after the items inside had been removed without causing issues with the old foundations, so we won't have the pipelines break and let all the water in to drown us all and cause certain doom! Lucky, aren't we? Oh, you're busy. Sorry!"

Surprised from the sudden interruption, Yubie pulled away and faced the little floating unit, nodding as the mechanical manta ray explained what had happened. When it apologized and began to float away, Yubie's fingers twitched as she resisted crashing her fingers into her forehead in embarrassment and annoyance. She looked at Brutus once again before returning to work, leaving somewhat slowly and reluctantly, as she still had so many questions and wanted to know more about the man and why he bothered to be the one to care about and support her despite knowing so little about herself.

"I'd better help them. I've been delaying for too long. And... thank you, Brutus."

She slowly calmed down, her head and hand against his chest as her extra arms faded out as if they'd never been there at all. He let her cry, continuing his recently halted humming, the hand she'd let go of falling to rest on his knee. After a moment, she looked up and smiled relatively widely, eyes shining, and he smiled back with a quirk of his lips before raising his head to watch the loud mechanical thing babble at the two of them in an annoying fashion. The interruption seemed to startle the girl, though he could understand not hearing it coming, given her current emotional state.

She pulled away and slowly resumed working after the interruption and he let her go, his smile staying on his face as his humming continued unabated. Rather that replying aloud, he nodded to her slowly, watching her face for a moment before lifting a hand to pat her shoulder once again and then turn away to resume work.

There was more reason to stay here than there was to return to the mountains, purpose wasn't all that hard to find in places where such catastrophic events had occurred. If not a girl with so much anger inside, then a family with no home to return to, or a soldier with a crisis of priorities, or a child with no father.

Re: [Mission: Salvaging the Remains] Bear With Me

Post by Yubie Zeta on Wed May 01, 2013 3:55 am

Although still feeling confused from another display of emotion and care, the joy Yubie felt was almost powerful enough to conceal her wish to understand more about Brutus, as he now seemed to understand more about her than she'd had the chance to learn about him. The last gentle pat on her shoulder subdued any real irritation she felt about the subject for now, and her mind instead wandered to where it was that he'd learned such a tranquil tune that could render others passive in such moments. She hoped that he'd stay nearby, at least for a little while so that she wouldn't have to say goodbye so soon when she'd just found a person who'd see her in a venerable moment and not shame her for it or use it to their advantage. If he would stay, then she could then begin to understand why it was someone would care in such a manner for another being before they'd had the chance to know them for long.

Noting now that she'd put off her real duties for far too long for the sake of spending time with her friend and relaxing her over-stressed mind, Yubie began to silently near the rest of the group, keeping her tone of voice low as she gave further instructions for their next movement. She'd wasted plenty of time, and while she didn't want to put her friendship with Brutus in an awkward situation by revealing her status, not involving herself would only let her people down. Of course, she had intentions on telling him in the future at a more convenient time where the two could still feel peaceful and calm, regardless of what political stature the other held in a government; telling him now in her mind would only lead to him retracting his words and leaving her. Now bothered with the additional realization that she was far more attached to the giant than she normally was others in such a short amount of time, Yubie began to cram the random thoughts and and concerns into the back of her mind so that she could do her job as she was designated to.

"The lineup looks to be a healthy idea, I was a little concerned as to how so many units would manage to arrive down here in such short timing. Is everything on the surface going well? Oh, and I don't think it wise for anyone here to try and harvest the old pipelines; while the materials could prove useful, I'd rather not have us risk ourselves to dig up a key component that could bring more water inside the dome. We should probably see if Delta would have any ideas for that, or if the inhabitants outside the dome would be fine with some residue left behind."

Deciding to chose her words carefully in case Brutus had followed and listened in, Yubie aimed on sounding intelligent and helpful, but not someone who believed they had the right to boss around others. In truth, she'd made several recent attempts lately to sound a little more polite and less demanding, as carrying the impression of a harsh and careless leader didn't usually have a tendency to spike patriotism in others. Though, several other books she'd read spoke of dictators that were loved and celebrated by their people, which seemed to greatly contrast other records of past civilizations. She'd have to have her assistants provide her with more accurate information for learning purposes in the future so that she could better base her decisions and actions over the country.

Going back to heavy lifting, helping some of the smaller people with larger objects they'd misguidedly thought they could pick up on their own to move exceptionally large or awkwardly shaped objects into the vehicles, his sensitive ears caught the girl talking to some of the others in the group, making suggestions and generally being curious and helpful. He dismissed the chat from his mind and resumed the labor. Physical work was therapeutic on some level, and there was always an act of bonding between people where physical activity was concerned, it was harder to eat the annoying guy next door if he'd helped you pick up and move a couch recently than it would be if he'd just nodded as you passed on the street once or twice.

The girl was a very attractive subject for his attention, but he had to at some point focus on his own interactions; it was necessary to remind himself that people were different from animals, his other side had been too close to home for a very long time, even before his holiday in the mountains, though calling it a holiday was an exaggeration.

His humming took on a more upbeat tune over time as his attention shifted more toward working than toward philosophy and anger, his movements reflecting that shift as he became more spry and alert, less treading softly and more walking briskly from place to place.

Re: [Mission: Salvaging the Remains] Bear With Me

Post by Yubie Zeta on Thu May 02, 2013 9:27 pm

With others hearing the upbeat humming from their giant assistant, some began to join in, humming the same tune, while some tried to mimic it as they clearly hadn't heard it before. After a few moments, the city began to echo with various tunes, somehow transforming the gloomy and cold environment into something reminiscently friendly. Yubie hadn't joined in, but it was obvious that the tune had become a moral boost of sorts for the young girl, as even when her sight looked to the insecure appearing patch in the dome, her features didn't contort into the look of pain, shame and disappointment as they normally did. Instead, she moved about with the team, giving instructions and assisting the turtle-like machinery to maneuver properly through the half flooded streets as they carried the heavy items.

Harsh sounds of crumbling interrupted the tune a few times, as designated buildings began to drop to the ground due to well placed explosions, and as the dust cleared, more of the mechanical units appeared, carrying the materials that would prove useful in rebuilding a possible new city. Signs of Team Alpha were visible as well at this point, as they'd finished clearing survivors and victims alike out of the old buildings and were now finishing carting the last of the people not designated to assist Charlie to the surface. It appeared that the last of the city would be demolished and cleared out by the end of the day; almost proving to be ironic for the individuals who also once participated in building the city, as it had taken so long to design, and mere moments to knock down and erase.

Out of the dust arrived an individual who'd been covered head to toe in diving gear, with his face covered by a breathing mask. He appeared to be carrying a backpack that had water inside, with a hose that was apparently made to pour the water into a multitude of cups that were carried in additional sack that was held by his loose arm. Approaching the rest of the group, the man began to offer much appreciated water to the hard workers, as those that required liquids to survive began to flock around the assistant, dispersing once they'd gotten their cup. For those that asked about food, the man mentioned that food was being served by other civilians that had volunteered to help, yet didn't have tactical or medical experience. A person would apparently come soon to take the hungry workers back up for a break and nourishment in the order that they'd descended so that they could prevent anyone from being overworked. He then noted Brutus's presence, and began to call out to him.

"Hey, big guy! Do you want some water? Hey... you know, I don't think I've ever seen you before. Are you new, or did I just miss a face?"

Re: [Mission: Salvaging the Remains] Bear With Me

Post by Brutus Demetriou on Tue May 07, 2013 2:35 am

The humming had worked surprisingly well, not only buoying Yubie's spirits but also the spirits of the others who worked around them. After some time of working to the tunes that others improvised off of his original, water arrived to distract the majority, and the tunes degenerated into a single voice that faded slowly out, as he moved to focus on the world around him once more. Watching from some ways off, grinning gently, he observed as the others gathered around one man who was handing out water, who then called out to Brutus himself.

"Yes, I would appreciate some water thank you." Walking nearer, doing his best not to loom over the man, which happened on occasion without him even trying due to his height, he replied to the other half of the mans question after slightly more thought. "I am new, and I am old. I lived here long ago, in my childhood, which, if you are in your 20s was before you were born. I moved away, and then came back. I lived far, far to the north though, so I'm not surprised you don't recognize me."

With that deluge of information, while the others were busy digesting, he accepted some water from the man with the questions and stood quietly, drinking from the rather small cup, dwarfed as it was by him massive hands. He had told them much, and at the same time not touched on anything that might hurt to bring up. It was all true, though not very detailed.

The man didn't seem intimidated by Brutus's size or mannerism, and in fact, seemed rather curious as to why the man could talk in such detail yet shed no real history on his life as if he was trained in the practice. He didn't further inquire, however, as he didn't want to become rude with curiosity, and instead gestured to the tank on his back as he wondered if the man would be in need of a refill since the container Brutus had been given was pathetically small in comparison to the man. Now that the tune had fallen silent, the humming and whirring of machines could be heard in the background, along with the commotion of chattering individuals, as they'd gotten comfortable enough to speak up despite the dangers.

"Well, I'm actually headed to my late thirties, but wow. You certainly don't look your age, if that's the case. Or maybe you do, and I'm just not familiar with how your kind ages; there's still people I haven't met, and I haven't traveled to all of the countries yet, so I don't know what all is in store for me. You want more water? Hey, hey Shiki! You want some water too?"

He had a friendly lilt in his voice, and seemed genuinely interested in understanding more about the man, and possibly more about his experiences. Trying to call the attention of the Shiki, the man's voice picked up in pitch, and he waved out to someone behind Brutus. Whoever it was that he was addressing apparently didn't bother to respond nor remain present, as the man looked surprised for a moment before shaking his head and muttering under his breath about how some people could be so temperamental. Looking back at Brutus, he appeared to have wanted to start up the conversation again, but froze when shouts could be heard east of their location. Dropping his sack of cups, he ran to where the shouting had originated, yelling a single apology to Brutus for having to abandon their pleasant chat.

"What happened? What's going on?"

The voice of the man could be heard among the crowd ahead, despite the noise coming from the small group already forming. Gasps could be heard through some of the commotion, and eventually the crowd parted to allow others carrying a torn body of a boy out of under wreckage. Amazingly, the person was still alive, defying large puncture wounds in his gut, and he'd apparently remained undetected the whole time out of shock from the wounds and fear that if he was noisy, he'd be detected and killed. With yet another survivor being escorted to the surface, the commotion began to settle once again, those remaining either stared at the blood on the ground that had collected in a pool from the boy's body, or rummaged through the remains of the now almost level city.

Re: [Mission: Salvaging the Remains] Bear With Me

Listening to the man speak, he nodded quietly in response to the gestures towards the water, helping himself to the liquid as the man let it go slack in his hands to better prompt the Shiki, who was apparently in their vicinity somewhere, either in their group or in one of the others just passing by in fulfilling their own duties in this sunken ruin of a city, rapidly becoming a wasteland covered by the thin skin of a bubble thanks to those same crews.

The shouts caused the man to drop his burden toward the ground, and Brutus took up the slack, lifting the whole mess into his own arms as he turned more sedately to catch the sight of the boy being carried out of the wreckage. The sight caused his muscles to lock up as he stared in shock at the small body torn so brutally, yet hanging on to life by some thread unknown to the rest of them.

Lowering himself to the ground slowly, he sat down in the dust, uncaring, setting the bundle of tubing off to the side. He continued to stare at the bloodstain long after the boy had been removed to safer areas, though he stood from the ground in an effort to tear himself away from dwelling on things that should be left in the past. The stain of red pooling slickly in the grey and white dust of the cracked grey road was too reminiscent of the first time he saw his first daughter, white dress drooping to the ground as she stood, red streaking her face, her hand on his leg as she stared up into his face, eyes empty, snow dropping to the ground all around them in the grey woods he once had called his home.

His eyes were vacant as he stared into the pool of red, body tense as wire as it was wracked by some memory, known to no one on the earth that still lived save himself. He lost awareness of the surroundings, save the grey tint to the city contrasted with the red in front of him. His back bowed slightly with the weight of the memory, and all that followed after.

Re: [Mission: Salvaging the Remains] Bear With Me

Post by Yubie Zeta on Mon May 13, 2013 4:41 am

Having heard the shouting, Yubie had made an effort to near the area where she'd seen the crowd start to gather. She managed to arrive on scene just as the people had set up a proficient manner of transport for the victim, and watched from the elevated remains of one of the buildings in silence. She could feel the uncomfortable sensation returning in her gut, and stared at the figures of the men and wounded boy until they became too distant for her to clearly view their shapes. Shame took hold of the leader's mind, and once again, she realized that she really had no clue how to respond to the situation. Brutus was right; she couldn't control everything that happened, even if she wanted to.

Holding still seemed to combat the feelings so that she could prevent lashing out, and her conscious mind departed from her body. She felt like she was floating, her vision noting more and more of the city's as it soared up above. She could catch all of the little details, see the abandoned dog that howled at stairs on an apartment complex that now led to nothing, the bits of broken plates in what used to be a dainty kitchen below, even the peculiar shine and shapes the blood on the ground created. Her body began to sway, and memories that flickered in her mind seemed to bump her on the head as she continued to float away, presenting the only obstacles that hindered her way into the city's sky.

"Yubie. Yubie. Are you there? Play, Yubie. Wear your hat and play with me."

She could hear her cousin's voice calling to her, the childish lilt always present when he did bother to shock everyone and prove that he wasn't always mute. Unlike everyone else, she had a tendency to react violently to it, as he always seemed so eager and happy when he managed to form a full and complete sentence. To her, it was pathetic, and it only evoked rage and envy from her small form. He never reacted to her anger with violence, as if he couldn't comprehend it. He'd hug her, or let her punch him, and even smile and hold her tea cup for her after she'd called him bad names. Now he didn't speak, and she couldn't understand why her memories decided to bring back those events while she floated away, content with the idea of fading into the atmosphere and losing sense of her reality.

"Yubie. Ma'am. Shiki!"

Another voice called to her, and suddenly, the memories began to fade. Yubie plunged from the sky, her mind shooting back down to her body below, the details fading from her thoughts and vision reconnecting to what actually unfolded before her eyes. As it did so, Yubie's mood also dropped, and her attempt to ignore the feelings that had built up after another countless session of guilt and anger that day had been rendered futile. She responded violently, just as she did when she was younger, clutching her fists and baring her teeth in an antagonizing view of rage and hate. When she opened her mouth to speak, a glare and bellow followed, quickly encouraging the one responsible for calling her back to raise his hands up to defend himself.

"WHAAAAT?"

"...we were able to identify the victim. His parents are already at the surface, and are glad he survived the encounter. His mother apparently was still at home when the attack began, and his father had passed out from blood loss. It looks like they'll all be okay... well, if you wished to know."

The man from before dutifully recounted the information he had, despite Yubie's reaction, and remained at his position. He'd lowered his arms, and his expression took on a more sullen appearance as if he somewhat understood the situation. After Yubie had calmed, she gave a nod and climbed down from her place, rubbing her forehead for a moment before speaking again. Eventually, she glanced at the blood on the ground, then looked to the man, responding with a far more approachable tone, no longer glaring and shaking with anger.

"Good. Get this cleaned up. We don't need people with hemophobia to stumble on this mess and cause further issues. The sight alone isn't pleasant for those without it."

He'd listened to her orders, nodded, and then quickly gathered a small group that began to clear the scene of the disaster. Standing alone for a while, Yubie wondered how she'd tell her people that they no longer had a capital city, that she couldn't always protect them even when presented with the answers to fix the problems, and that she couldn't promise their security even with the recent changes and upgraded military. Honesty was more important than her image when it came to her leadership position, or at least that's what she tried to assure herself, and then she turned to see Brutus sitting not far from the wreckage. Pangs of guilt once again attacked her mind, and she realized that she hadn't exactly followed her list of rules when it came to honesty, at least not for the first person that had given her a hug in a long time. She stood in place, eyes gazing at him, her mouth slightly open as she couldn't think of any more words to say.

Re: [Mission: Salvaging the Remains] Bear With Me

Post by Brutus Demetriou on Mon May 13, 2013 5:24 am

The area was so quiet, nervous and hushed conversations not breaking through the film that had descended over his perception of the world, his mind sinking deeper and deeper into the connection between his brown eyes and his daughter's vivid purple globes. It was only with the shout of "Shiki!" that his head snapped around, a flash of the white fur of his son the last part of his memory to disappear from his vision as he watched the little girl he'd accompanied into these depths respond to the cry angrily, and only slowly calm.

His mind turned that over as he stood in the wreckage, gazing around at the deconstruction of a world, gaze only slowly returning to her as his mind fully digested the new information, as it slowly penetrated the sheen of memories. She was looking at him blankly, her lips parted slightly in an open expression, somehow vulnerable despite her actions of moments before. The life had returned to his eyes by this point and he walked to where she stood, quickly. His stride was even, seeming unhurried even as it ate up the distance and he arrived in front of her, several feet away, gazing down into her face once again.

"Is that your burden? Is that what has you struggling for control? This, your city, not just the place where you live?" Again the extended hand, this, the first time he was not kneeling while he offered it, the first time he actually knew who she was. He wasn't smiling this time, nor was he frowning, his face was shrouded as he kept wanting to glance back at the rapidly disappearing blood splatter

He had heard, he was moving towards her, and now he was speaking. Her eyes glazed over as the newest events occurring about her carried on their course, and Yubie felt as if moving her feet from the ground or changing her position would simply shatter the dome above them as if it was mere glass. The truth had spilled out just as if there had been a second encounter of a crazed individual attacking her barriers with no care as to what secrets lie within, and like the water rushing to greet her, Brutus had closed the distance in mere seconds. Unlike the water, Brutus stopped before touching her, and she hadn't moved away to defend herself despite vague feelings of wanting to at this particular moment in time. He'd asked a question, and finally she realized that it was rude to stand still and not at least acknowledge it.

"...it's my duty to protect them. I failed. Now people are dead, hurt, homeless, and scared."

A rasp had grown in her voice as she spoke, more so than her usual tone, and it almost sounded as if gravel had somehow crept its way into her throat. Her legs seemed to be heavy for her, as she dragged her feet while moving towards him, pushing the grime on the ground with her. Almost about to trip, she froze herself, her arms dangling as her torso hunched forward slightly. She raised her head to look at the hand he offered to her, then looked back down and turned away. Yubie didn't know what he would say next, or what to expect. He didn't seem angry yet, which confused her, and she didn't know whether it was fair to accept his motion after she'd managed to play such a role in the death of so many.

"I've been going about this the wrong way, and I can see that now. Perhaps I can't protect everyone, or keep the peace, as I know it's impossible to prevent every war and misfortune. I can't deny that I've been selfish, though, and I don't deserve what I have. That won't stop me from doing what I can, and I'll continue my work as best as possible. However... you shouldn't be the one to comfort me for my shortcomings after being misled. I lost the right to be a child the day I accepted this job."

She moved forward haltingly, gazing at his hand for a moment before looking down and turning away from him and it, shrinking into herself, as if the burden was growing moment by moment, pushing her into the ground the more she thought about it. Her hunched back faced him as words poured out of her mouth, the pain obvious in how she spoke, how harsh she was towards herself cutting into him word by word until he couldn't stand it anymore.

He closed the remaining distance between them in less than one stride, no longer content to be the silent specter at her back, listening and passing judgement. Rather than offering his hand as her back was still to him, he reached the short distance between them and placed a hand on her shoulder. The hand was gentle, but it wasn't an optional touch, he wasn't going to give her the opportunity to shrug it off without listening to him.

His voice low and intense, he spoke to her quickly and quietly, anger barely peeking out from behind his calm facade. "Be quiet. It isn't up to you to determine what you deserve, or what people around you do as they interact with you. I'm not 'comforting' you, I'm trying to teach you something. Even now, after accepting my words, you still try to control everything, you're still trying to label what has happened, place a blame where blame may or may not be. Stop." His hands were heavy and though he did his best not to put any pressure on her small arms, it was difficult.

"...don't our actions determine what we deserve? I just wished to do the right thing, and I couldn't keep up with him. I couldn't stop him. I couldn't stop the other one, either. I... I'll listen to you. I want to understand, like always. Sometimes it hurts, though, and I don't really know how to react. It's simple enough to get used to the pain, but handling it can be confusing, right?"

The girl spoke out of impulse, and the gravel sound in her voice continued to worsen. Noises of water slapping against the ground could be heard in the background, and her body tilted slightly from the pressure of Brutus's hand on her shoulder. It was simple enough for her to detect that he wasn't content with his word choice and tone, but he'd been careful to make an attempt to conceal it. Why Brutus put so much effort in doing so had also confused her, though she wasn't about to question him after he'd given her a second lecture that day. Her eyes closed again, and she tilted sideways a little more, but not because of the weight. The hand was warm, while everything else felt cold again; she couldn't help but press into the heat source despite being concerned that he could lash out at any time due to disappointment or anger.

"I don't know what to do anymore. I don't know how to keep burying people that deserve to live. Forcing them to come back isn't always right, either. I... sorry. I'll stop now. Quiet now. Quiet."

Almost unconsciously, she moved towards the hand on her shoulder as she tried to explain herself only to fall silent at his direction finally. Responding to this, he moved the hand on her shoulder to pull her backward slightly, resting her shoulders on his chest as he knelt down once again, leaving further contact up to her for the second time in so many minutes. His other hand landed on her other shoulder as one of his knees landed in the dust.

Voice still rough with suppressed anger, he replied to her broken off questions "Yes, what you do determines what happens to you, but it isn't your right to determine what those things are. That is up to the rest of us. Shhhh." His original hand on her shoulder stroked from side to side very slowly as he knelt in the dust to the sound of background chatter that barely intruded on their little bubble of quiet. A slow pan of his head from side to side saw people continuing to socialize but choosing to leave the two of them alone for the moment, their preoccupation obvious. Those who were looking their way got a respectful nod of thanks before he returned his attention to the girl in front of him.

"You need to finish up here so we can move to a better location to talk. Some food and drink and a place to sit would be good, wouldn't it?" he said, addressing the back of her head, his face close enough to just barely rustle the longer strands of her hair with his deep breaths. He acknowledged that she did indeed have responsibilities and authority, but at the same time expected some level of obedience. His tone was somewhat authoritative, but left wiggle room in case she felt uncomfortable of the massive presence kneeling behind her.

The feeling and weight of a second arm on her shoulder balanced Yubie's body, and she merely leaned backwards when Brutus pulled her. Yubie no longer feared retaliation from this man, as it seemed to be the last thing he'd resort to when the situation didn't carry immediate threat to himself and others. She still didn't quite understand why it was that he was being so kind to her, or what was the proper way to respond; situations like this were simply unfathomable to her just moments ago, as she'd rarely experienced confrontations like this, and she'd never received this kind of attention from someone who was still a mystery. Resisting didn't seem wise, though, as the man already seemed to be frustrated with what had already happened.

"Mm. Mhm. That sounds good."

Her response was short, but clear enough to show that she agreed with his question. Food and a little rest would be wise for her, and she understood the importance of that more. A part of her still wished to question this man, interrogate his motives and dissect a conclusion so that she would be left with little to no lasting curiosities on how the man thought and who he was, but she decided to let it go for the moment. Forcing more explanations out of the man would most likely anger and possibly harm him, as well as further ignore his advice on not controlling everything and everyone around her. Deliberately ignoring wise advice would be a poor choice of direction, especially with how desperate the scene around her had already become.

Closing her eyes, Yubie let in a deep breath, and very slowly released the air trapped in her lungs. When she reopened her eyes, she felt as if pressure that had built up in her head had been expelled somehow, and she could think just a little more clear. She'd done enough for now, as the rest of the tasks involved using clear instructions that had been carefully laid out, and there were only a few tasks remaining that she, the teams, or volunteers needed to accomplish that would further ensure the next plan would go through without any difficulty. For just a moment, she could let go of her non-malicious, but seemingly unquenchable thirst for control over the people and land of Shinrei, and recover properly. Yubie tilted her head back, letting her eyes gaze up to his, and spoke softly, the rasp still present in her voice.

"We've done enough for now. They'll call me if they require something of me. I believe we can trust the teams to handle the rest. Heading up now would be very nice..."
